Two half marathons make a whole
|
Naomi Burnett, age 31, of Birmingham (left), decided to run the EDF Energy Birmingham Half Marathon recently after coming across a feature in her local paper. Her sponsorship is going to Independent Age.
Naomi is no stranger to the needs of older people. A graduate of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, she is involved with InterAct, a company of actors who visit wards for older people to read to them.
|
'The people I read to are so lonely and scared when I see them in hospital’, she says. ‘If Independent Age helps people like them stay in their own homes where they’re happy and safe, that’s fantastic.’
Naomi’s aunt, Julia Macauley, known as Ju (above right) then decided that she too would run the Half Marathon for us.
Ju, a qualified nurse, is the main carer for her 81 year old mother who is blind and has late stage dementia. She explains: ‘In a way Mom’s really lucky. She’s not badly off financially and we look after her on a rota basis. How older people who’re less well-off and don’t have family nearby cope, God only knows. The work Independent Age does in giving at least some of them that extra bit of help is really great.’
Will you help make Naomi and Ju’s exertions over 13.1 miles worthwhile by sponsoring either, or even both of them?
Email Andy Gudge for sponsorship forms or for more information about the EDF Half Marathon on 26 October 2008.
