CAROLINE MONTAGU (Lady Sandwich)
is an Associate Fellow of The School of Oriental and African Studies’(SOAS) London Middle East Institute, a committee member of various Saudi-British organizations (Saudi-British Society, Saudi-British Joint Business Council, the ABCC Chairman’s Consultative Committee on the Middle East).
She has been awarded the 2007 Saudi British Society Rawabi prize for the person who has done most for British-Saudi relations outside the commercial field. She has recently written a chapter on Saudi women’s development for a Saudi publication. Her current researchexamines aspects of civil society in Saudi Arabia, particularly associational life and the interplay between NGOs and the ruling Al Saud. Lady Sandwich and her husband have also been invited by Prince Sultan bin Salman to visit the Saudi provinces to give a heritage lecture, discussing conservation matters of mutual interest to Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
In 1999 Lady Sandwich began her work on Saudi women and social affairs. In 2001 she published Saudi Arabia:On the Road to Reform, funded by the UK’s Department of Trade & Industry. In 2003 she authored a report for the British Council on Saudi women’s NGOs, and in 2005 co-authored a report for the Foreign & Commonwealth Office on Needs and Capacities of the NGOs in Saudi Arabia.
