‘In her final years, my Gran, Betty, was a beneficiary of Independent Age, which was a real support to her both financially and in providing her with a frequent visitor. ‘My friend Chris and I decided that we wished to run the London Marathon in support of Independent Age. We ran dressed as Batman and Robin and completed the course together in just over five and a half hours. 2009 will be my fifth race. My best time to date was 4 hours 20 minutes – probably no coincidence that I did it without the costume!

Achievement ‘It is very difficult for people with full time jobs to have the time to complete such a hefty programme so I was quite pleased to average three evening training sessions a week from the beginning of December.
There’s no point in pretending that running the marathon is easy for me or anybody. It isn’t. But when we crossed the line we agreed that there were many others for whom it had been a far greater achievement. I have loved running the marathons – to date my team has raised over £14,000. I hope that my Gran is proud of what we have done in her memory.’
