Independent Age response to launch of materials to support learners and carers (Department for Business, Innovation and Skills)
Provided to news agency, Adfero, on 24.02.10
"Specialist materials for adult learners in care homes are a very welcome development. Older people can always learn new things if supported to do so, and learning is just as important in care settings as anywhere else. It can promote residents' confidence and self-esteem as well as their mental wellbeing. However, in order for such materials to have the greatest impact and reach, they must be provided as part of a wider strategy, which actually recognises the importance of meaningful activity in care settings. Such activities require space, staff time and some expertise to deliver and the funding system in many care homes does not currently support this."
Department for Business, Innovation and Skills - call for evidence on the default retirement age
01.02.10
Independent Age statement in response to the report from Key Retirement Solutions (http://www.keyrs.co.uk/press-releases/2009monitor/) revealing that an increased number of older people have turned to equity release schemes
13.01.10
"Older people have been hit hard by rising food and fuel prices. They are typically on fixed or even declining incomes, as any money they get from savings will be falling because of low interest rates. Their choices are to cut back on spending, eat into savings (if they have them) or raise extra money through schemes such as equity release. Since over two thirds of householders over the age of 65 own their own homes outright, it is easy to see why this option might be used more. But we would urge them to first ensure that they are claiming all available benefits - up to £5.4 billion of benefits goes unclaimed every year."
Independent Age's response to Michael Parkinson's Dignity in Care Report
12.01.10
"Independent Age wholeheartedly supports the Dignity in Care Campaign. Older people, just like anyone else, deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Expectations of care should not have to lower with age. All too often, the older people we support tell us that no matter how intelligent they may be, they are defined instantly by their age and treated differently as a result. Behind every face, whatever the age, is an individual with their own hopes and expactations. Every one of us has a right to be heard."
Independent Age cold weather statement
08.01.10
"We know from speaking to the older people we support that many are trapped in their homes at the moment, afraid to venture out onto icy paths and pavements. This threatens to make worse the issues of loneliness and isolation that can be particularly difficult at this time of year for many older people. The issue of staying warm can also be a real challenge for those on fixed incomes. So there really could not be a better time for neighbours, friends and family to telephone or visit to see if they can help, or just for a chat."
Independent Age Christmas Quote
16.12.09
"Older people value their independence but it can all too easily turn to isolation for those that struggle to get out of their homes. The most valuable Christmas present you can give this year might simply be a visit or a phone call to a neighbour, friend or relative."
