Statement on Carers Week 2008

Through our direct contact with older people, we know the vital role that carers play to support independence. Many of these carers will experience ill-health and financial difficulties during their later years. Carers Week is an opportunity for Independent Age to call for greater recognition of the significant social and economic contribution made by carers, who tirelessly devote their time and energy to looking after loved ones, and the impact that this can have on their physical and emotional health and wellbeing.

Independent Age is a national charity that helps older people to live with independence and dignity in their later years. Its practical support enables older people to stay in their own homes for as long as possible and lead active and fulfilled lives. The charity concentrates its help on those who have contributed to improve the lives of others. For example, the people it supports may be looking after elderly or frail relatives or friends and are often the last to seek help for themselves.
